This is a pure kite surfing beach, suitable for all ability levels from beginners upwards. It is fairly close to the city's airport, yet feels quite remote as the area around it is completely undeveloped.
The beach is small and sandy, quite deep and soft but with a good grassy area that kites can be launched from. Entry to the water isn't easy, so it will pay to ask around before you commit yourself. The water can be warm here in summer and approached 30° C, and while no wetsuit is required some sun protection is definitely advised.
Spring and winter are the best times to be out here, as you will get plenty of days when the wind will blow from the west at over 30 knots or around 25 knots from the south-west. In the summer the wind is lighter at 15 to 20 knots, while autumn only gives the occasional good day. The water is shallow and cloudy, and conditions vary between flat calm to choppy depending on the strength of the wind. There is also a tidal channel here which seems to funnel the wind and increase its strength.
Parking is allowed on the grass behind the beach and there is plenty of room. You can camp here if the mood takes you, but for any sort of home comforts you are going to have to head into Auckland itself which is just a short drive away.
Just be careful making your entry to the water, apart from that there really isn't anything to worry about here.
